What Cabinet Door Replacement Covers

This is the narrowest of the keep-the-boxes jobs. We replace the moving parts on the front of your cabinets and nothing else.

  • New doors for every opening, or only the ones you name.
  • New drawer fronts, fastened to your existing drawer boxes.
  • New hinges, usually concealed cup hinges, bored into each new door.
  • New pulls and knobs if you want them.

What we do not do on this job is veneer the face frames, re-skin the end panels or touch the toe-kick. That is refacing. Door replacement assumes the frames and exposed cabinet sides already look right, or that you will paint them to match the new doors.

Homeowners usually call us for one of four reasons: thermofoil doors that are peeling near the range or dishwasher, doors that have warped or swollen, a door style that dates the kitchen, or a single damaged door that no longer has a match.

New Doors, Refacing or Paint: Picking the Smallest Job That Works

New doors fix the doors. Whether that is enough depends on what sits around them, so here is the honest comparison.

Door replacement is the right fit when

The face frames and end panels are in good condition, or painted, so a new door will not make them look tired by contrast. The doors themselves are the problem: peeling vinyl, swelling, cracks, or a style you are done with. You want a style change, such as raised panel to Shaker, without covering every frame in veneer.

Refacing is the better fit when

The frames and cabinet sides are stained or chipped and you want a wood look. A new stained oak door hung on an old, worn frame shows the difference immediately. Refacing puts veneer on the frames and plywood skins on the end panels, so everything matches.

Painting is the better fit when

Your doors are sound and you like their shape, and only the color bothers you. There is no reason to buy new doors for a color change.

Full replacement is the better fit when

The boxes are damaged, the sink base has swollen from a leak, or the layout does not work. New doors on a failing box are money spent twice. We look at all of it during the measure and tell you which of these your kitchen needs.

Door Styles and Materials for Replacement Fronts

Shaker doors

A flat panel held in a rail-and-stile frame. It grew from the Shaker furniture tradition of plain, functional form, and it suits traditional and modern kitchens alike, which is why it is the style most people pick.

Slab doors

One flat piece with no frame. Slab fronts give the clean, unbroken look of a contemporary or frameless kitchen and pair well with full overlay hinges.

Raised-panel doors

A five-piece door whose center panel is profiled with an ogee, chamfer or cove edge so it stands proud of the frame. It keeps a traditional house consistent.

Materials, and why Austin humidity matters

Solid wood frame and panel. The panel floats in its groove instead of being glued, because wood moves across the grain as humidity rises and falls, and a wide panel can change width by as much as half an inch. In Austin's humid subtropical climate that allowance matters. MDF. A hard, flat, smooth surface with no grain, which makes it a strong base for a painted door. Sealed properly it is stable; unsealed or low-grade MDF can swell if it gets soaked. Veneered doors. A real wood slice over an engineered core, for a stained wood look on a stable door. Thermofoil. A PVC film formed over MDF. It is smooth and easy to clean, but it is more vulnerable to heat and moisture, which is why it tends to peel next to ranges and dishwashers. If you choose it again, we fit heat shields at those spots.

Getting the Fit Right: Overlay, Hinges and Face Frames

A new door that is a hair too big rubs its neighbor; one too small shows a gap you notice every morning. Fit comes down to three things.

Overlay

Overlay is how far a door covers the frame around its opening. An overlay door is sized at the opening plus twice the overlay. A standard overlay shows a band of frame between doors; full overlay doors sit close together and hide nearly all of it. Inset doors sit inside the frame, flush with it, and demand the tightest fit of all. Changing overlay changes every door size and usually the hinge.

Face frame or frameless

Face frame cabinets have a supporting frame on the front of the box, usually about an inch and a half wide, and the hinges mount to it. Frameless, or European, cabinets have no front frame, so the doors hang directly off the box sides. We identify which you have at the measure, because it decides the hinge and the door size.

Concealed hinges

Most new doors hang on concealed cup hinges, bored into the back of the door with a 35 mm cup and screwed to a mounting plate. Each one adjusts for height, side to side and depth, which is how every gap ends up even across the kitchen. Soft-close dampers slow the door as it shuts so it closes quietly.

Drawer fronts

Drawer fronts are measured to line up with the doors beside them, then attached to your existing drawer boxes. If a drawer box itself is broken, we will point that out rather than hide it behind a new front.

What Drives the Cost of Replacement Cabinet Doors

Two kitchens with the same footprint can need very different door orders, so we price from your measure rather than a sheet. These are the factors.

  • Number and size of doors and drawer fronts. Every piece is built to its own opening.
  • Door style. Slab fronts are the simplest to produce; a Shaker door has five parts; a raised panel adds edge profiling.
  • Material. Solid wood, veneered, paint-grade MDF and thermofoil each carry a different cost.
  • Species and finish. Stained hardwood, a clear coat, a painted finish and a glaze take different time to finish.
  • Overlay change. Moving to full overlay or inset changes every size and often the hinges.
  • Hinges and hardware. Soft-close hinges and new pulls are part of the order.
  • Matching the frames. If the frames and end panels need paint to suit the new doors, that is added work on site.
  • Repairs. A drawer box or a hinge-side stile that has split needs fixing before a new front goes on.

There is no demolition, no countertop removal and no wall or floor work in a door job, which keeps it the smallest build of the three. Your actual figure comes from the free in-home measure. Call to set one up.

How a Door Replacement Job Runs

  1. Measure. The installer measures each opening, drawer and existing door, notes the overlay, the hinge type and whether your cabinets are face frame or frameless.
  2. Door schedule. You receive a list of every door and drawer front with its size, hinge side, style and finish. You approve it before anything is built.
  3. Build and finish. The doors and fronts are made to that schedule and finished as one batch so the color is consistent.
  4. Hang and adjust. Old doors come off, new ones go on, and every hinge is adjusted until the reveals line up. Drawer fronts are set level with the doors beside them.
  5. Walkthrough. We open every door and drawer with you and hand over the written warranty.

Your kitchen stays in use throughout, since the boxes and counters never move.

Replacement Cabinet Doors Around Austin

We replace cabinet doors across Austin and the west side of Travis County, including Rollingwood, West Lake Hills, Sunset Valley, Shady Hollow, Barton Creek, Lost Creek, Steiner Ranch, Lakeway, The Hills and Volente.

Newer lake houses in Volente, many of them built since 2000, often have boxes in excellent shape and doors that simply need a new style, which is a door job at its cleanest. The 2000s builder-grade kitchens of Steiner Ranch are prime candidates when a thermofoil or budget door is the weak point. In the older homes of Shady Hollow and Rollingwood, we check the frames first, because worn frames can push the job toward refacing.

  3. Built to your measurements

Boxes, doors and panels are made to the dimensions taken in your home, not to catalogue sizes.

Questions

Cabinet Door & Drawer Front Replacement: Common Questions

What sets the price of new cabinet doors?

How many doors and drawer fronts you need and their sizes, the door style, the material and species, the finish, whether the overlay changes, the hinges and hardware, and any painting of frames to match. We quote after the free in-home measure.

Can you replace just one or two damaged doors?

Yes, we can build a single door to the opening. Matching an aged finish exactly is the hard part, so we will look at the existing doors and tell you honestly whether a single new door will blend in.

My thermofoil doors are peeling. Should I paint or replace them?

Replace them. Paint over peeling vinyl keeps lifting. New doors, and heat shields beside the range or dishwasher if you choose thermofoil again, solve it properly.

Should I replace the doors or reface the whole kitchen?

If the frames and cabinet sides look good or will be painted, new doors are enough. If they are worn and you want a wood look, refacing covers them too. We tell you which at the measure.

Will new doors fit my old cabinets?

Yes, because each one is sized to your actual openings and overlay, not to a catalog size. We confirm whether you have face frame or frameless boxes so the hinges suit.

Can I switch to full overlay or inset doors?

Full overlay works on most face frame and frameless cabinets with the right hinges. Inset needs a frame true enough for tight gaps, which we check in person before recommending it.

How long before my new doors are installed?

Most of the wait is building and finishing the doors to your approved schedule. The lead time is confirmed in writing once you sign off on sizes and style.

Do new doors come with a warranty?

Yes. The job carries a written warranty.
