About our custom closets

Our team provides dressing tables, benches and glass-front cabinet towers, delivering organized storage that suits how you dress for homes and tailored cabinet solutions for both residential and commercial projects. One crew of our own measures the room in person, draws the closet in shop drawings you approve, and installs it under a written warranty.

From the spacing of every hanging rod and shelf to a full walk-in fitted with lighting, mirrors and a seat, our team handles every detail. Serving Austin, West Lake Hills, Barton Creek and Lakeway, we plan each closet around the clothes that are going into it, not around a catalog grid.

Why Austin Elite

Walk-In, Reach-In and Wardrobe Closets We Build in Austin

A closet is a built-in architectural feature, not a piece of furniture you move later, so it is designed to the walls it lives inside. We build three kinds, and the room usually decides which one you get.

Walk-in closets

A walk-in is a storage room large enough to stand in while you choose what to wear. Ours combine wall-mounted cabinets, open shelving and drawer stacks, and when the footprint allows it we add a mirror, a dressing table or a bench. Good lighting is part of the plan from the first drawing, because a deep closet with one ceiling fixture leaves the back corners in shadow.

Reach-in closets

A reach-in is built into a bedroom wall and closed by doors. The whole job is getting more out of a shallow space: double hanging where short garments allow it, a shelf run above the rod, and drawers low enough to open without hitting the door frame.

Wardrobe cabinets and linen closets

Where a room has no closet at all, we build a fitted wardrobe into the wall. Tall, narrow linen closets for towels and toiletries fit beside a bathroom or at the end of a hallway, and the awkward space under a staircase often becomes the most useful storage in the house.

Closet Materials: Plywood, MDF and Aromatic Cedar

Wire shelving is cheap and it bends under a stack of sweaters. Wood shelving is sturdier, and that is what we build with. The question is which panel goes where.

  • Plywood is made of layers glued with the grain of each one running across the next. That cross-graining resists warping and shrinkage and holds a screw near an edge without splitting, which is why we use it for shelves that carry weight and for the cabinet boxes themselves.
  • MDF has a hard, flat, smooth face that takes paint with no grain showing through, so it makes clean painted doors and drawer fronts. It swells if it gets wet, so every edge is sealed.
  • Aromatic cedar, sold as eastern red cedar, is the wood moths avoid, which is why closets lined with it have been called cedar closets for generations. We line a whole walk-in or just the drawers that hold wool.

Austin's humid subtropical climate, with long and very hot summers, is part of why sealing matters. A closet on an exterior wall sees more swing in moisture than an interior one, and we choose the panel and the finish with that in mind.

What Drives the Cost of a Custom Closet

We do not publish a closet price, because two closets with the same floor area can be very different jobs. What moves the number is easy to name, and we walk through each item at the measure.

  • Linear footage of hanging, shelving and drawers. More wall run means more material and more cabinet boxes.
  • Drawers versus open shelves. A drawer carries a box, a front, slides and hardware. An open shelf carries a board.
  • Box construction. Plywood boxes cost more than particleboard and last longer under load.
  • Door style and finish. Painted MDF, stained hardwood, glass inserts and inset versus overlay doors all price differently.
  • Cedar lining, lighting and mirrors. Each is optional and each adds labor.
  • Accessories. Tie and belt pull-outs, valet rods, shoe shelving and jewelry trays.
  • Removal and wall condition. Tearing out wire shelving, patching the drywall behind it and dealing with walls that are out of plumb all take time.

The honest way to price a closet is to stand in it. Call to book a free in-home measure and you get a drawing and a written quote built on your walls, not on an average.

How We Plan a Closet Around Your Wardrobe

Most closet systems are designed by room size alone. We start with an inventory: how many long dresses or coats, how many shirts and trousers, how many pairs of shoes, and whether two people share the space. That count sets the ratio of long hanging to double hanging to drawers, and it is the step that stops a new closet feeling full on the day it is finished.

The measure

The same crew that will install your closet measures it. They note the door swing, the ceiling height, outlets and vents, and any wall that leans, because every one of those changes where a cabinet can sit.

Shop drawings

You get drawings showing every rod, shelf and drawer before anything is built. Changes are made on paper, which is where they are free.

Build and install

Boxes are built to the drawings, then scribed to your walls on site so there are no gaps at the ceiling or along an uneven wall. We leave the closet clean, adjusted and ready to load.

Custom Closets Across Austin and the West Side

What a closet job looks like depends a great deal on when the house was built. In West Lake Hills and Shady Hollow, many homes were built before 1990, and their original closets were sized for a smaller wardrobe, so the work is often widening a reach-in or converting a spare room into a walk-in. In Rollingwood, where older ranch houses are being replaced with new homes, the closet is designed with the rest of the house and can be as large as the plan allows.

Steiner Ranch was largely built in the 2000s under a master plan with dozens of homeowner associations, and many of its homes still carry the builder-grade interiors they were sold with. Where that means a closet of wire racks, replacing it with wood is one of the most visible upgrades in the house. Many of Volente's lake homes are newer construction, where the conversation is usually about finishing a large walk-in properly rather than finding room for one. We also serve Barton Creek, Lakeway, The Hills and Sunset Valley.

Other Built-In Storage We Design

A closet project often leads to the next room. Many clients pair a new walk-in with built-in cabinets and bookcases for a bedroom sitting area, with laundry room and mudroom cabinets where coats and shoes pile up by the back door, or with garage cabinets for the things that should never have been in a bedroom closet in the first place. Each is its own design, drawn and built by the same team.

Questions

Custom Closets: Common Questions

How much does a custom closet cost in Austin?

It depends on the linear footage, how many drawers versus open shelves you want, the panel material, the door style and finish, and extras like cedar lining or lighting. We give a written quote after a free in-home measure rather than a guess over the phone.

How long does it take to get a custom closet?

The timeline starts once you approve the shop drawings. Build time depends on the size of the closet and the finish, and the installation itself is usually short because the boxes arrive built and are fitted on site. We give you a schedule with your quote.

Should I replace my wire shelving or add to it?

Wire shelving has limited weight capacity and it bends over time, and mixing it with wood rarely looks right. Most clients replace it entirely. We remove it, patch the wall anchors and build the new closet in its place.

Can you turn a spare bedroom into a walk-in closet?

Yes. A spare room gives you enough floor area for cabinets on three walls, a dressing table or bench, and good lighting. We measure the room, check the door and window positions, and draw the layout before anything is decided.

Is a cedar-lined closet worth it?

Moths avoid aromatic eastern red cedar, which is why it has long been used to line closets and chests. If you store wool or seasonal clothing, lining the whole closet or just a few drawers is a sensible choice, and we can show you both options at the measure.

Do you serve my area?

We work across Austin and the west side, including West Lake Hills, Rollingwood, Barton Creek, Shady Hollow, Sunset Valley, Lost Creek, Steiner Ranch, Lakeway, The Hills and Volente. Call and we will confirm your address.

Is your work covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every closet we build and install is covered by a written warranty, and the same crew that measured and installed it is the one who comes back if anything needs attention.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the closet, look at what you store in it, talk through hanging, shelving and drawer needs, and show you material and finish options. You leave with a clear idea of the layout, and a drawing and written quote follow.
